Assessment of Jaundice Methods

1. Assessment of Jaundice by Kremer’s grading-

It is the visual assessment of icterus by blanching the skin over the parts of the body.  Neonatal Jaundice advances in Cephalocaudal direction and finally to palms and soals and is believed to be based on skin thickness and bloodflow. Kremer classified severity of jaundice based on visual assessment of different parts of the body. Face 5mg/dl and Soles>15mg/dl.

 

2. Icterometer

It is designed for inexperienced health workers where, a plastic strip contains color codes that is matched with color of skin.

 

3. Transcutaneous Bilimeters

Are most handy and non-invasive tool for screening jaundice. It works on the Principle of Spectrophotometry. Probe is pressed against forehead or sternum to get the reading.

4. Bilimeter that measures actual blood bilirubin to give readings.

 

5.  Conventional Vander Bergh test is unreplicable and less reliability as it has higer error margin of 10-20%.

 

6. ETCO- Exhaled End-tidal Carbon monoxide breath level is fund to correlate well with total bilirubin production.
