How to make an earthquake survival kit?

After the recent 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Nepal, almost all people in the affected region were forced to take shelter on open spaces outside their homes. It wasn’t until then that the people had realized the importance of a kit for surviving the earthquake. We have compiled a list of basic supplies needed for preparing the kit.

1. Tent or Tarpaulins

  • Provides a temporary shelter
  • To be placed at a safe place
  • A single tent or 2 tarps atleast 8 X 10 feet

2. High energy dry food

  • Noodles
  • Cheese
  • Chocolates like snickers
  • Beaten rice
  • Biscuits
  • Other packaged or canned foods

3. Water bottle:

  • Prepare atleast a 1.5-2 l of water for each person per day
  • Chlorine or water tabs

4. Sleeping bags

  • Windproof, portable and warm

5. First Aid kit

  • 2 pairs of Latex or other sterile gloves
  • Sterile dressings to stop bleeding
  • Cleansing agent/soap and antibiotic towelettes
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Burn ointment
  • Adhesive bandages
  • Eye wash solution
  • Thermometer
  • Prescription medications taken every day such as insulin, heart medicine and asthma inhalers.
  • Prescribed medical supplies such as glucose and blood pressure monitoring equipment and supplies

6. Torch, Emergency light with extra battery backup

  • Disasters are often accompanied by power cut-offs

7. Lighter or Matchstick

  • To prepare food during cut-off of gas supply
  • Safety from animals

8. Mobile phones and powerbanks

9. Helmets for each family members (if feasible)
